OWWA Announces OFW-Dependents Scholarship Program


MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte –The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) based in Tacloban City in a press release reported that they are offering a scholarship program which will provide  financial assistance to qualified dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers who has a monthly salary of $400.00 or below.


It was noted that the OFW-dependents shall enroll in any 4 or 5 years baccalaureate or associate course leading to  a  baccalaureate degree or associate degree in State Colleges of Universities or any Commission on Higher Education (CHED) accredited schools.


Any applicant who will qualify to the program must be a Filipino citizen, a beneficiary or legal dependent of an OWWA active member.


The beneficiary or legal dependent are stated as follows: children either natural or adopted of a married/single OFWs; brother/sister, either half or full-blood of a single/childless married OFW; a single who is not more than 21 years old is also eligible to the program and a high school graduate or about to graduate from high school; physically , mentally and morally fit; must pass the qualifying or entrance exam to be conducted by OWWA, among other qualifications.


The program offers scholarship privileges such as financial assistance of P20,000 per year or P10,000 per semester that shall  cover tuition fees and other academic related expenses which shall be released on a semestral basis.  It stated that there will be no summer class/term disbursement of funds; and a group health and accredited insurance coverage of  P100,000.00 per scholar.


Some requirements mentioned to be submitted to the OWWA office are the application form duly accomplished by the applicant, (2) copies passport size picture; proof of relationship to an OWWA member which includes birth certificate and baptismal certificates; proof of OWWA membership of OFW such as Official Receipt of OWWA contribution and certificate of membership issued by OWWA-MPC. While for the school records, the applicant must submit Form 137/Transcript of Records and a Certificate of True copy of grades for those who are already in college for school year 2010-2011.


All qualified applicants must also pass the entrance requirements and shall enroll in the preferred school in each province, while the scholar shall also observe and maintain the school’s academic standards and no case be allowed to transfer to any state college/university located in other regions are some of the selection criteria mentioned.


The grant is only provided once and non-transferable, according to the report.  The scholar must not be a recipient of other scholarship grants or similar grant from any government or private institutions, it added. (PIA-soleyte)
