The people in this region of the Philippines are mostly “Bisaya” or Visayan and most have their own industries as humble farmers and fisherfolk. There are plenty of religious festivals and other cultural festivities when the time of the season has come like fiestas, Sinulog festival, and the Sinugdan which means beginning. The province is also a major producer of abaca products and has beautiful topography in terms of mountainous areas and beachfront locations.

Tourism hubs in Southern Leyte

Thanks to the efforts of the Southern Leyte Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (SLCCI) and the outhern Leyte Tourism Development Framework Plan (SLRDFP), there are four major tourism hubs that will be completed by the end of 2013. This will be in congruence with the growing rate of tourists which are 200,000 yearly that will be good for the overall tourism project of the province. The president of SLCCI which is Engr. Robert Castañares stated: “We intend to position Southern Leyte as the playground of Eastern Visayas by 2013 so we are currently in partnership with the provincial government of Southern Leyte and the concerned city and municipal governments, We hope to generate at least P400 million worth of business in the province as direct benefit from these tourism hubs within a year after its completion. That is aside from the jobs that would be generated and other long term economic benefits”

With what he said, you can see the complete commitment of the province to bloster their image through travel destination hubs like Maasin City Animal Theme Park, Agas-Agas Adventure Park in Sogod, Silago Forest Canopy Walk and the Napantau Dive Resort Area in the town of Malitbog. This also goes as an alternative plan to increase revenue of the province since the agricultural and manufacturing sectors have not been doing so well, there have been recent flooding and pests that ravaged the abaca crops that dropped agricultural production significantly.

The recently completed tourist hub is the Agas-Agas zipline which is about 1.5 kilometers long and 377 feet high from the base of the Agas-Agas Bridge. It is the third zipline attraction in Eastern Visayas after the ones in Caluwayan Island Resort in Marabut, Samar and Leyte Park Resort Hotel in Tacloban City. The place will feature extreme sports facilities, cable cars, bungee jumping, and ATV racing (All Terrain Vehicle).
